About TASB

The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) is a voluntary, nonprofit, statewide educational association that serves and represents local Texas school boards and was established in 1949 with two main goals in mind:

  • To share information through publications and training to help Texas board members serve their communities more effectively.
  • To speak with a unified voice to decision makers to chart the best future for Texas public schools.

Membership

TASB is proud to have nearly all 1,025 Texas school boards as Active Members of the Association. The Association represents the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state — more than 7,000 school board members, who serve more than 5.4 million Texas students.

TASB's other membership categories include 20 education service center (ESC) boards, 50 community colleges, 21 central appraisal districts, 133 shared service arrangements, and 78 charter schools.

Governance

Active Members govern TASB through the Association's board of directors, an annual Delegate Assembly (which serves as TASB's general policy-making body), and a grassroots process used to develop the Association's Advocacy Agenda. Policies and decisions made by the Delegate Assembly are translated into action by the TASB Board, which is made up of school board members representing every region of the state and an ESC representative.

Advocacy

TASB's official positions on legislative and regulatory matters are incorporated into the Association's biennial Advocacy Agenda developed through TASB's grassroots process and as adopted by the Association's Delegate Assembly. Although TASB's specific stance on education issues may change over time, the Association remains dedicated to the preservation of local control of public education.

Products and services

TASB's products and services are provided to members as part of their annual membership fees or on a fee basis, depending upon the service.
